Importance of Using the Right Materials
Main Pipe/Tube- For this project, copper was selected to be the material for the pipe casing. It has several qualities that make it useful to use in a heat pipe. It is resistant to corrosion, very ductile, durable, and is non-magnetic and non-sparking [1]. Copper tubes of an average size are accessible at most hardware or home improvement stores.
Caps- The caps used to seal off the ends of the tube in the project are copper as well. Copper can be soldered together easily, making the material useful for conjoining the different parts [1]. The caps seal the system so that the heat transfer process can occur. After soldering the metal parts together, the contents of the pipe cannot escape to the surroundings, completing the cycle. The caps and main pipe can be purchased from the same location.
